Shopify is the leading e-commerce platform for businesses selling online. It is feature-rich, fast to implement, and powerful enough that a custom-built alternative is rarely necessary. Clients are consistently surprised by how quickly a store can go live.

How We Do It

You create products in your Shopify store and link them to your website using Shopify-generated JavaScript. Updates in the store reflect on your website instantly. From cart to payment, everything is managed by Shopify — including South African customers.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. Do not host your website with Shopify. It hands control of your domain to Shopify, locks you into their template structure, and prevents a custom website build.

  2. Keep the interface simple. Most products have no variants — one spec, one price. Remove distractions and make the Add to Cart button the focus. The easier it is to buy, the more you will sell.

  3. Consider the costs:

    1. A basic Shopify store costs 1 USD for the first three months, then 19 USD per month — exceptional value for what you get.
    2. You will need a payment gateway. PayFast integrates well with Shopify and handles all transactions between buyer and seller. Register with PayFast early and configure it before launch.

A Live Example

Timeless Beauty Group

We recently built a Shopify integration for Timeless Beauty Group — a haircare brand wanting to sell their products online. We set up the store, created each product with image, description, stock level, SKU, and price, and embedded Shopify's JavaScript at the correct points on their website.

We tested the checkout using Shopify's built-in test gateway and developed the site on our own server while the client finalised their PayFast registration. In a live demo at our offices, the client placed an order and we monitored the store. The result was instant: bank confirmation, order email, pending status in the store, and stock reduced by one. The client was surprised by how straightforward it was.

Fine Tuning

We handled the details — shipping rules, delivery costs, and low-stock thresholds to flag when products need restocking. The owner receives an email notification for each order; once payment is confirmed, the item is dispatched. On launch, Timeless Beauty Group's strong social media presence helped drive immediate awareness and sales.
